Urban Roti Is Bringing Bold Indian and Caribbean-Inspired Flavours to Langford!

Big flavours, fresh ingredients, an incredibly diverse menu, and a unique approach to dining. Urban Roti & Curry Kitchen is doing things a little differently in Langford, and we’re here for it!

When you think about ordering restaurant-quality Indian food, you probably picture a bustling restaurant, tables filled with curries, and the smell of freshly cooked spices filling the air. But what if we told you some seriously delicious food is coming out of a kitchen you might not even know exists?

Meet Urban Roti & Curry Kitchen, a Langford-based food business serving up an impressive selection of Indian cuisine, Caribbean-inspired roti, and flavour-packed street food, all from inside a shared commercial kitchen. We recently had the opportunity to step behind the scenes, meet the people making it happen, and see firsthand how this unique business model is changing the way local food businesses operate. Between the incredible variety on the menu and the story behind the business, there’s plenty to get excited about.

A Different Kind of Restaurant Experience

Urban Roti operates out of PurePrep’s shared commercial kitchen at 834 McCallum Road in Langford, rather than a traditional restaurant storefront. While you won’t find a conventional dining room, what you will find is a team passionate about creating fresh, high-quality food without the added expenses that come with running a full-service restaurant.

Owner Kumar brings 15 years of experience in the food industry to Urban Roti, and that experience is reflected in the thought behind the menu, the ingredients, and the standards the team sets for itself. Their philosophy is simple: restaurant-quality food shouldn’t require a traditional restaurant. By operating from a commissary kitchen, Urban Roti can avoid many of the overhead costs associated with a storefront, including a dedicated dining room, front-of-house staffing, and other expenses that ultimately influence menu pricing.

Instead, those resources can go toward what really matters: the food. It’s a smart approach that helps keep their menu more affordable while maintaining the quality and care you’d expect from a restaurant kitchen. It also creates a more accessible dining option for customers who prefer enjoying a great meal at home, aren’t comfortable in busy restaurant environments, or simply want something delicious without the traditional sit-down experience.

Indian Flavours Meet Caribbean Inspiration

One of the things that makes Urban Roti particularly interesting is its approach to roti. While many of us are familiar with traditional Indian curries and flatbreads, Caribbean-style roti brings another layer of culinary history and flavour to the table.

The Caribbean roti tradition has roots in Indian migration to the Caribbean during the British colonial period. Over generations, Indian cooking techniques and spices blended with Caribbean ingredients and culinary traditions, creating a distinct style of food that’s become beloved throughout the region. Urban Roti draws inspiration from this connection, bringing together Indian curry flavours and the Caribbean-inspired concept of wrapping hearty, flavourful fillings inside roti.

It’s a combination that deserves more attention in Greater Victoria’s food scene, especially for anyone who enjoys exploring the different ways cuisines evolve and influence one another. Whether you’re already a fan of Indian food or looking to try something a little different, Urban Roti offers plenty of opportunities to explore new flavours.

Let’s Talk About the Food (Because There’s A LOT to Choose From)

One thing that immediately stands out about Urban Roti is just how extensive the menu is, and we mean extensive! We’re talking everything from creamy curries and flavour-packed roti wraps to South Indian specialties, Indo-Chinese street food, crispy appetizers, biryani, and even wings. There’s something for the person who orders butter chicken every single time, and plenty for the adventurous eater who wants to discover something completely new.

Naturally, the roti deserves some attention. The Butter Masala Bliss Roti is an excellent introduction, featuring your choice of protein in a creamy butter sauce made with Urban Roti’s house spice blend. For those who enjoy a little more heat, the Chettinad Spice Bomb Roti takes things in a different direction with bold, peppery South Indian spices and aromatic masala. There’s also the Malabar Coastal Roti, which brings coconut-based curry flavours into the mix, and the Fiery Vindaloo Roti for anyone who likes their meal with a serious kick.

Vegetarians aren’t an afterthought here, either. Options like the Aloo Gobi Comfort Roti, featuring potato and cauliflower in a mild sauce, and the Chettinad Veg Fire Roti, made with a fiery South Indian spice blend and creamy coconut curry base, offer just as much variety. With so many different sauces, spice levels, and fillings to choose from, you could easily work your way through several visits without ordering the same thing twice.

While roti might be in the name, the rest of the menu is equally worth exploring. The curry bowls cover everything from classic butter sauces and tikka masala to rich kormas, spinach-based saag curries, and fiery South Indian specialties. Then there are the biryanis, including the Dindugal Style Chicken Biryani, made with aromatic seeraga samba rice and served with traditional accompaniments, and the Hyderabadi Biryani, featuring fragrant, spiced rice layered with vegetables or your choice of meat.

If you’re looking to branch out, the Chicken Kothu Parotta is another dish worth adding to your order. This South Indian specialty features flaky, house-made Malabar parotta chopped and tossed on a hot griddle with chicken, egg, onions, and aromatic spices. It’s a completely different way to enjoy flatbread and a great example of the regional variety represented throughout the menu.

The street food selection is equally tempting, with dishes like Urban Chicken 65 Pops, crispy South Indian-style fried chicken seasoned with a house spice blend, and Samosa Channa Chat, which combines crispy smashed samosas, chickpea curry, yogurt, tamarind chutney, and mint sauce. There’s even an Indo-Chinese influence throughout the menu, with chilli cauliflower, fried rice, and spicy chicken dishes tossed with peppers and savoury sauces. And yes, they have wings, too! From Chettinad Pepper Wings to Butter Chicken Wings, even familiar favourites get a little extra personality.

What we love about this menu is that it doesn’t limit itself to one style of Indian cooking. It brings together regional flavours, familiar comfort foods, and dishes that might be completely new to some diners. It’s the kind of menu that makes you want to order a few different things, share everything, and immediately start planning what you’ll try next.

Behind the Scenes at PurePrep: A Kitchen Full of Possibilities

One of the coolest parts of our visit was getting a behind-the-scenes look at PurePrep’s shared commercial kitchen in Langford. The space is huge, open, and buzzing with activity, with approximately 10 different food businesses working alongside one another, preparing meals and fulfilling orders for their customers. It was fascinating to see so many independent food concepts operating under one roof!

What makes this setup particularly exciting is the opportunity it creates for local food entrepreneurs. Rather than taking on the significant costs of opening a traditional restaurant, businesses can access a fully equipped commercial kitchen, test new concepts, and grow their customer base without the financial commitment of a storefront. For businesses like Urban Roti, this also means lower overhead costs, which can help keep menu prices more affordable for customers without sacrificing quality.

We loved getting a glimpse into this unique side of Greater Victoria’s food scene, and there’s so much more to share about the businesses and people making it happen.

Stay tuned, because we’ll be heading back for a closer look! More on PurePrep and the incredible local food businesses cooking up something special there coming soon to Victoria Taste Buds.

Fresh Food, Made Daily

Another thing Urban Roti emphasizes is freshness. The team prepares its food daily, with a focus on quality ingredients, carefully developed recipes, and consistent preparation. Kumar’s years of industry experience help guide that commitment, and the goal is to deliver the same level of care and quality customers would expect from a traditional restaurant.

The team takes pride in what comes out of its kitchen, and that dedication is at the heart of the Urban Roti concept. Rather than relying on the atmosphere of a dining room or the experience of traditional table service, the focus is entirely on the food itself. It’s a reminder that a great dining experience doesn’t always have to involve sitting down at a restaurant table. Sometimes, it comes in a takeout container, enjoyed on your couch, with a really good curry. And we’re definitely not complaining.

How to Order Urban Roti in Langford

Ready to give Urban Roti a try? Since the business operates from a shared kitchen, the experience is designed around convenient pickup and delivery rather than dine-in service. You can currently order through Uber Eats or DoorDash, but the team encourages customers to order directly through its website whenever possible.

Why? Third-party delivery platforms take a percentage of each order, meaning ordering directly allows more of your money to support the local business preparing your meal. Urban Roti is also working toward introducing its own delivery service, which will give customers another convenient way to order directly while helping the business retain more of its revenue.

If you’d rather pick up your order yourself, you can do that too! Urban Roti is located at 834 McCallum Road in Langford, inside the PurePrep shared kitchen.
