Captivating Croissant Craze

Since 2013, the croissant has embarked on an exhilarating journey, spearheaded by Dominique Ansel’s groundbreaking creation, the Cronut – a delectable fusion of croissants and doughnuts that set taste buds abuzz. This culinary phenomenon sparked a frenzy, igniting a craving for innovative pastries that not only tantalize the taste buds but also dazzle on social media feeds.
We see layers of flaky pastry, brimming with luscious cream or jam, crowned with decadent icing, all expertly fried to a golden hue. That’s the magic of the Cronut – a testament to pastry genius and a touch of audacity. Lines wrapped around city blocks within moments of its debut, and Instagram feeds were ablaze with snapshots of its sugary splendour. But the Cronut was merely the harbinger of a new era. Soon, we found ourselves enraptured by Black Tap’s towering CrazyShakes, Darren Wong’s mesmerizing Raindrop Cakes, and the goth-inspired Goth Cone from Little Damage.

Each creation became a social media sensation, captivating audiences worldwide and sparking an insatiable craving for confectionery innovation. Now, this croissant craze has made its mark in Victoria, with local bakeries leveraging Instagram-worthy treats to meet our hunger for novelty.
I recently uncovered an array of tantalizing croissant creations at Oso Cookies & Donuts and Tombo, and they’ve bewitched my taste buds entirely. Oso’s Crolls are a marvel to behold, brimming with an assortment of flavours and adorned with irresistible toppings. What’s more, Oso has partnered with local businesses to elevate their Crolls to new heights – indulge in their chocolate-dipped Crolls, generously coated in Chocolate Favoris chocolate, or savour the divine fusion of Crolls embellished with Bon Macroon’s macarons. With Oso’s ever-evolving flavour lineup, be sure to keep an eye on their social media for the latest updates.

Meanwhile, at Tombo, prepare to be enchanted by their Square croissants, each one bursting with its own unique and delightful flavours. With a fresh flavour unveiled every week, it’s advisable to arrive early – the squares get put out at 10:30 AM– to secure one before they vanish from the shelves.

So, what is it about the croissant that beckons us back for more? According to pastry aficionados, it’s the versatility. Croissants serve as a blank canvas, ready to be adorned with any flavour or filling imaginable. In today’s era, where we yearn for Instagram-worthy delights, the croissant provides an ideal platform for bakeries to showcase their ingenuity and creativity. And the craze extends beyond the professionals – home bakers are also delving into croissant experimentation, drawing inspiration from viral trends and global flavours.
In essence, the allure of the croissant transcends its humble origins. With its delicate layers and buttery richness, it epitomizes the perfect marriage of style and substance – a true work of art.
Who knows? Perhaps one day, the Cronut will be but a footnote in the croissant’s illustrious history, as bakers continue to push the boundaries of pastry perfection, fueled by the desire to create treats that not only delight the palate but also command attention on our social media feeds.
