Holding Small Businesses Accountable
As a food enthusiast and blogger, I often find myself immersed in the vibrant world of culinary creations, celebrating the passion and dedication of small businesses that bring delicious delights to your tables. Yet, amidst the sea of mouthwatering dishes and heartwarming stories, there’s a darker side that I cannot ignore—a rising trend of small businesses resorting to bullying tactics online, particularly on platforms like Instagram. I feel compelled to shed light on this issue and advocate for accountability within our community, even if it means reconsidering our support for beloved brands.
Instagram, with its visual appeal and expansive reach, has become a playground for small businesses to showcase their offerings and connect with customers. However, this digital arena has also witnessed instances of competitive aggression and unethical behaviour, often manifested in the form of online bullying. It’s disheartening to see businesses, which should ideally foster camaraderie and mutual support, engaging in tactics that undermine the very essence of entrepreneurship.
One of the most recent incidents that caught my attention involved a beloved doughnut company that, despite its yummy treats, was embroiled in controversy due to its aggressive online behaviour. They ridiculed a quote that two businesses had used to discuss their recent collaboration in a comment section (even though the comment has since been deleted people and other businesses don’t forget and/or might have the screenshots). Instead of celebrating its own success, like collaborating its doughnuts with so many other local businesses to put their sweet twist on sandwiches and other unique offerings, this company resorted to publicly disparaging other small businesses, leaving a sour taste in the mouths of many loyal customers, including myself. As well as, publicly showing consumers and businesses their true colours.
As food enthusiasts, we have a responsibility not only to celebrate culinary excellence but also to hold businesses accountable for their actions. While it’s tempting to turn a blind eye to such behaviour, especially when it comes from companies whose products we adore, the silence only perpetuates a culture of impunity. By continuing to support businesses that engage in bullying tactics, we inadvertently become complicit in their actions, sending a message that such behaviour is acceptable in our community.
Therefore, I urge fellow food enthusiasts, consumers, and businesses to not only research the business you are supporting but also take a stand against online bullying and hold small businesses accountable for their conduct. This means being vigilant about the brands we choose to support and collaborate with while speaking out against behaviour that goes against the values of respect, integrity, and fair competition. It may require making difficult decisions, such as boycotting a beloved doughnut company or withdrawing our endorsement of a once-favourite restaurant. However, the long-term health and integrity of our community are worth far more than any temporary indulgence.
Additionally, we must use our platforms to amplify voices that advocate for ethical business practices and promote a culture of positivity and collaboration. Let’s shine a spotlight on businesses that not only excel in their culinary creations but also embody principles of fairness, kindness, and inclusivity. By championing these values, we can help cultivate a more supportive and nurturing environment for small businesses to thrive.
