A Cozy New Katsu Spot Bringing Big Flavour to Downtown Victoria ๐Ÿฑ

Victoria has a new spot that deserves to be on your radar: Katsu + Co.

Tucked downtown, this cozy little restaurant has brought a lot of life to the space. The team has really brightened things up, creating a room that feels warm, welcoming, and full of that cozy energy you want when youโ€™re about to dig into something crispy, savoury, and comforting.

Letโ€™s talk about the menu

The menu is intentionally small and focused, which actually works in its favour. Everything centres around Japanese katsu, the classic breaded and fried cutlet served with traditional sides.

The main katsu options include:

๐Ÿฝ Hire Katsu โ€“ pork chateaubriand with panko
๐Ÿฝ Rosu Katsu โ€“ pork loin cutlet with panko
๐Ÿง€ Cheese Katsu โ€“ stuffed with pork loin and melted cheese
๐Ÿค Ebi Katsu โ€“ tiger prawn cutlet

Prices sit around $25โ€“$27, which might look a little high at first glance. But like many traditional katsu restaurants in Japan, your meal also includes:

๐Ÿฅฌ Unlimited cabbage
๐Ÿš Unlimited rice
๐Ÿฅฃ Unlimited miso soup

So what initially looks like a small plate quickly turns into a very filling meal.

What we ordered

We ordered the Hire Katsu (pork chateaubriand) the one thatโ€™s been popping up in photos online.

At first glance it might look small, but donโ€™t let that fool you. The pork is clearly high quality, incredibly tender, and perfectly crisp on the outside. Paired with the cabbage and rice, itโ€™s a surprisingly filling plate.

Around the table we also shared:

๐Ÿง€ Cheese Katsu โ€“ a crispy pork cutlet stuffed with gooey melted cheese
๐ŸŽƒ Kabocha Korokke โ€“ deep-fried mashed kabocha squash croquettes
๐Ÿง€ Menchi Cheese Katsu โ€“ a minced pork cutlet with creamy cheese inside

The Menchi Cheese Katsu was a standout. Instead of a full pork cut, itโ€™s made with seasoned minced pork, giving it a softer, almost juicy interior. Add the melted cheese inside and it becomes this rich, comforting bite that feels like the ultimate Japanese comfort food.

And because no katsu meal is complete without something cold to balance it out, we also ordered a Frozen Sapporo, which was the perfect pairing. Super crisp, ice-cold, and exactly what you want with fried food.

Next time Iโ€™m absolutely going back to try:

๐Ÿ› The Katsu Curry
๐Ÿฅช The Katsu Sandos

Because if the cutlet quality is this good, those dishes are going to be very hard to resist.

The people behind the restaurant

Another thing that really stood out was the staff and owner.

Everyone was incredibly friendly and more than happy to answer questions about the menu. If youโ€™re not familiar with the different cuts or katsu styles, theyโ€™re very open to explaining everything and helping you decide.

We even had the chance to chat with the owner about the restaurant and ask how things could be improved moving forward. They were genuinely open to feedback and ideas, which is always something we love seeing from local businesses.

The menu is intentionally small and focused, and honestly it works. The only thing we could think of was potentially adding a vegetarian-friendly katsu option, which would likely resonate well with Victoria diners.

The vibe

This is the kind of place that feels perfect for:

โœจ Cozy date nights
โœจ Casual dinners with friends
โœจ Solo comfort food moments

Everything feels intentional. Everything tastes like it was made with care.

Easy to get to

Accessibility-wise, this spot is incredibly easy to get to:

๐Ÿšฒ Bike-friendly
๐ŸšŒ On major bus routes
๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ Walkable from downtown
๐Ÿš— Street parking nearby and parkades

Victoria is full of incredible restaurants, but places like this stand out because they feel personal. They feel like passion projects. And they feel like community.

Small space. Big flavour. Crispy perfection.
