Downtown Victoria’s Food Scene Is Shifting, Here’s What’s Coming Next

Downtown Victoria is on the cusp of another culinary refresh, with several anticipated restaurant openings poised to breathe new life into familiar streets and long-standing spaces. From new international flavours to reimagined local favourites, these upcoming additions signal a continued evolution of the downtown core’s dining landscape.

Here’s what Victoria Taste Buds is watching as these changes take shape.

Driftwood Chinese Buffet Moves Into a Downtown Classic

A well-known corner in the heart of downtown is preparing for its next chapter. Driftwood Chinese Buffet is set to take over the former home of Azuma Sushi at Yates and Broad streets, a space that sat quietly empty after Azuma closed in 2025, ending more than two decades as one of downtown Victoria’s busiest sushi destinations.

Recently installed window signage promotes a dinner buffet model with prices ranging from $9.95 to $32.95, along with a senior rate listed at $29.95 for guests aged 65 and older. The tagline “One Dinner. Endless Choices.” hints at the large-format buffet experience Driftwood is known for.

The restaurant group already operates multiple locations across Vancouver Island, offering a broad selection of hot dishes, seafood, stir-fries, and classic Chinese-Canadian favourites. While renovation timelines and an official opening date have yet to be confirmed, the arrival of Driftwood marks a notable shift for a high-traffic downtown address just steps from the Bay Centre.

Don Jose Brings Michoacán-Style Mexican Flavours Downtown

Authentic Mexican cuisine is also set to make its mark on downtown Victoria. Don Jose is preparing to introduce carnitas estilo Michoacán to the city core, focusing on slow-cooked pork, bold flavours, and time-honoured techniques.

Rooted in tradition and made with locally sourced ingredients, the concept aims to transport diners straight to the streets of Mexico, celebrating regional cooking with care and intention. While full details around the downtown location are still emerging, the restaurant’s arrival adds to a growing demand for deeply regional, authenticity-driven dining experiences in Victoria.

Le Croissant Chaud Adds French Pastry to Broad Street

French baking is coming to Broad Street with the anticipated opening of Le Croissant Chaud, a new bakery and café expected to open this spring at 1315 Broad St.

Founded by Aviva Chorin alongside her son, pastry chef Lucas Fourrier, the bakery was born from a shared passion for craftsmanship and hospitality. Fourrier trained at École Ducasse in Paris in 2025, grounding the project in classic French technique. Joining the team is French head pastry chef Gwendoline, whose experience includes baking in Montreal alongside chefs trained by Cédric Grolet.

Le Croissant Chaud will focus on traditional croissants, baguettes, pain au chocolat, brioches, éclairs, and madeleines, with a small sit-down café space and fewer than 30 seats. A key part of the concept is education: the bakery will feature a dedicated classroom for pastry and bread-making workshops throughout the year.

Pending final city permits, the team is aiming for a March opening, bringing the aroma of fresh French baking to one of downtown’s historic streets.

Dough Eyes Pizza Takes Over a Former Favourite

Change is also coming to the 500-block of Pandora Avenue, where the former Virtuous Pie location is being reimagined as Dough Eyes Pizza.

The new concept is led by local restaurateur Sam Harris, who also operates Brasserie L’Ecole and Café Brio. While specific details around Dough Eyes Pizza’s menu and opening timeline remain under wraps, Harris’ involvement signals a locally driven revival of a space that has already seen significant foot traffic and community support.

Republic of Chicken Is Headed Downtown

Another fried-chicken concept is joining the wave of new food openings downtown. Republic of Chicken is preparing to open a location in the downtown core, adding to the area’s growing mix of casual, comfort-driven dining options.

Known for its crispy fried chicken and bold, flavour-forward approach, Republic of Chicken has been building interest locally and is now setting its sights on a downtown footprint. While details around the exact location, menu offerings, and opening date have not yet been publicly confirmed, the move signals continued confidence in downtown Victoria as a destination for approachable, high-impact food concepts.

More information is expected to be released as plans progress.
