There’s No Place Like Johnson Street: Birdman Set to Land in Former Friends of Dorothy Space

Another new chapter is coming to Johnson Street.

The owners behind Wind Cries Mary and Rudi, both well-loved staples in Victoria’s dining scene are preparing to open a third restaurant. Cottage Hospitality Group has announced plans for a new concept called Birdman, set to take over the former Friends of Dorothy space at 537 Johnson Street.

Renovations are expected to begin this week, with the team aiming for a spring opening, potentially as early as May 1. While details about Birdman’s concept remain under wraps, a formal announcement is expected in the coming weeks.

For those who frequented Friends of Dorothy, the colourful and welcoming LGBTQ+ lounge shared in January that it was “taking some time off,” emphasizing that it was not a goodbye but a “see you soon.” Known for drag performances, karaoke nights, and creating a vibrant, inclusive gathering space downtown, FOD remains committed to reopening in a new location, though further details have yet to be announced.

As one iconic space prepares for its next evolution, and another beloved business works toward its return, downtown Victoria’s hospitality scene continues to shift and grow.

We’ll be watching closely for more details on Birdman and for news on where the yellow brick road leads Friends of Dorothy.
